I’m a realist,

I tend to see things for what they really are and that’s how I create, realistically. But in every instance, there is much more than meets the eye. My challenge is to reach a place in the painting that goes beyond a simple representation of what I see, capturing the spirit of the moment, the mood of the subject, and a sense of emotion in the scene.

I find the true essence of the image the medium–the colors, the brush strokes, the textures. I paint a variety of subjects because I tend to embrace the beauty around me whether it is the joy of a child feeding the ducks, the radiance of a sunset, or an afternoon mountain shower in a beautiful landscape. In every successful painting, the viewer sees a story, experiences the passion, remembers the smells and tastes of the spices, and feels the power and emotions of that moment in time.

Another Moment in Time–Commissions–Portraits of People and Pets

Another moment in time is depicted in this painting. It was commissioned by this gentleman’s daughter in law. I was so proud to have the opportunity to paint him for his family. I hope they find as much joy in it as I did in painting it for them. He looks so “at ease” in the pens. Bet he was counting those cows to be sure they were all where they belonged. I really enjoy painting commissions–working with the client to create the spirit of the individual or people in the painting. I also find a sense of satisfaction meeting those needs whether it is a painting of a beloved grandparent, child or even a pet.  Hopefully I will get this opportunity more and more! Contact me to put your name on the list–I have a few paintings waiting. So if you have a gift with a deadline, it’s important to let me know.

Getting Ready for Christmas

December First Friday was last night and I really can’t believe that we are this close to Christmas. I haven’t done a single thing to get the house ready. Haven’t bought any presents. I used to do this all by Halloween! Those were the days.

I have been reading about how we can really help to improve our local economy by supporting local small businesses. And then if we buy items made in America, we can help the job situation in our country. I heard that if every family spent at least $64 on items made in America, over 200,000 jobs would be created.

I know it is hard to even find things made in America–especially if you are shopping for a TV or some type of electronics. But if you shop in SENTOSA, everything is made in Amarillo-made in Texas–Made in America. You really don’t have to look that far. I even use paint that is made in America. I buy as many of my supplies as possible in Amarillo and use a local frame shop for framing.

Everything is unique–truly one of a kind–made by the hands of me, a local artist. If you want to shop local and shop small, you’ve found the right place–SENTOSA, #102 in the East Wing of The Galleries at Sunset Center. You can also shop online. I’ll do free gift wrap for all purchases–and I make beautiful presents. I don’t think you’ll find anyone that can beat my artistic wraps! I’ll even deliver if it’s on my way home–and I go past most of Amarillo on my way to Canyon from Sunset! So if you are looking for convenience and special gifts, think SENTOSA.

When I think of presents that mean the most, I think of things that people bought or made for me that might not have been on my wish list, but were special presents that became real treasures. If  you are looking for that kind of gift, please give me a chance to help you find it in Sentosa.

How about a special Christmas painting–I have a few! Santas, Poinsettias, and even a beautiful scene of Canyon Road in Santa Fe. Santa is looking through one of my painted windows at a beautiful Christmas tree to see if the kids in the house are being nice or Naughty–maybe checking out the adults, too! My pottery would make beautiful gifts if you are looking for something for friends or coworkers or your child’s teacher. I have some fiber arts– beautiful scarves and shoulder bags. If you are looking for handbeaded jewelry, I have some beautiful Swarovski crystals that you can’t find just anywhere mixed with turquoise and silver that will become heirlooms for your friends and family.  So give me a call and come by. 806 676.1733–I’m at the gallery almost every afternoon. But it’s always a good idea to call first.

I painted this great little poodle today. I think she turned out great!

I’ve got a couple of commissions to finish up before Christmas. Then I’ll be out beating the bushes to get a few last minute items– or maybe a lot of last minute shopping. I have a few things in the gallery that will be gifts for family, but I just can’t make a gift for everyone–believe me I try!

Final Eleven of The ELEVENS

It’s really hard to believe that 11-11-11 is really here and the final group of 11″x11″ paintings are ready to hang tomorrow.  I’ve enjoyed the Elevens Project, but it is a bit of a relief knowing that I don’t have to have Eleven Paintings ready to hang by December 11th. Every month I’ve had to really push myself to get them ready on time!  And I’m proud to say that the ELEVENS are ready! (Maybe not totally dry! But finished!) AND HERE’S 11-11-11 ELEVENS!

It’s really quite a hodge podge of paintings. The red poppy is in honor of Veteran’s Day. Poppies bloomed across some of the worst battlefields of Flanders in World War I, their brilliant red color an appropriate symbol for the blood spilled in the war. On Monday of this week, The Today Show anchor, Matt Lauer was in Namibia, my inspiration for the zebra! The dogs, Sweetpea and Khaki, belong to friends and they were sold ahead of time. I had to put in Santa–since it is the last of the bunch of ELEVENS and Christmas is on its way. Santa is actually a 12″ x 12″, in honor of December! The cardinals are always so beautiful in the snow and would make a wonderful Christmas decoration or gift. The fall foliage is from our trip to Missouri. I noticed  I didn’t paint any still lives during the project, so I included three this month. After all pears are really beautiful now and would look beautiful in any home! The ELEVENS really make a wonderful gift. They can be put on an easel on a table or shelf or hung on the wall. Original art is a one of a kind unique gift for anyone!

As always, you can purchase by phone or come by the gallery. I should be there most of the afternoon, but call first to be sure–806-676-1733. You can also email me at marsha@marshaclements.com

ELEVENTH First Friday Art Walk for 2011

11 Reasons to be at SENTOSA for 1st Friday Art Walk

I don’t know if you are aware that communities all over our country are organizing Art Walks from Florida to California and everywhere in between. It is really an interesting phenomenon. I’ve been thinking about why this is happening and what the benefits of attending really are. Here are a few reasons that I think people attend art walks–and in particular the First Friday event at Sunset Center every month.

  1. ART-I hope that the main draw for you to come to Sunset Center and visit my gallery SENTOSA is the ART. It’s important to me to have a variety of new paintings each month. I hope you enjoy seeing the new works in S.
  2. VARIETY-In SENTOSA you will see a variety of styles and subjects and mediums. I mostly paint in oils–but I also do hand built pottery, fiber arts, jewelry and decorative painting. Be sure to look in my office and both of the gallery rooms for a variety of art. The artists in Sunset are all so different and so is their art. We have many different mediums and styles. There is something for everyone!
  3.  All the ARTISTS are there-On any given day at any time during the work day you will find several artists at Sunset working in their studio/galleries. But you will also find several galleries closed. Even though I try to be in SENTOSA every afternoon Monday through Saturday, lots of things come up that keep me away.  Artists have to work to create and sometimes it cannot be done do at Sunset. SometimesI am in the Canyon painting.  Weyman Brown has to get out and dig up mesquite stumps to take back to his shop to turn into beautiful bowls and vases. Some artists are out taking photos on location. I’ve been gone for over a week–had out of town company and then went to visit the grandchildren in Missouri. But on First Friday–most are of us are in our galleries ready to talk to you about our ART! I don’t know about you, but I love to visit with the artist about their styles and techniques and the story behind their work. 1st Friday is your opportunity to do just that! Be sure to ask me any questions about the story behind a painting or what made me want to paint it or just how I did it.
  4. Support your local small businesses. There is so much talk about  imported goods and products. You can hardly find anything that is really Made in the USA. Well, everything in SENTOSA is made by me! And almost everything at Sunset is made locally by a local artisan. A few galleries represent artists from other parts of the country. But you don’t have to worry about the money you’re spending going to manufacturers overseas. It will stay right here in our community. So every
  5. It’s FUN! Art Walk really is fun. Not a month goes by that I don’t see someone that I haven’t seen in years. It’s the social event of our community every month. Your FRIENDS are there. You should be too–having fun!
  6. It’s an opportunity to NETWORK-meet new friends and make contacts. Those relationships can be important to you. Life is all about building relationships!
  7.  There is ENTERTAINMENT–a variety of musicians and performers can be found throughout the mall.
  8. Get CREATIVE. It’s a great way to get your own creative juices flowing. For me, visiting galleries and talking to artists is a great way to get a little inspiration, think of new ways to do my art and try something totally different. It makes me more creative! I visited a couple of galleries in Wichita KS on the way home yesterday–but I’ll tell you something–not one of them compared with the Galleries at Sunset!
  9. BEAUTY–The mall is a beautiful place. Starting with the sculpture garden–beautiful in every season and then as you move into the mall the plants are gorgeous–but the real stars are the galleries and the works of art adorning every nook and corner. Every artist has made their gallery their own. It displays the art and personality of the real artist within. Inside and out–Sunset is a beautiful  space to visit.
  10. Support the local ART community and CULTURE of the panhandle by purchasing art from local artists. Sometimes local artists are taken for granted. Art doesn’t have to be created by someone far away to be worth buying. Many of the artists in Sunset are represented in galleries throughout the country. But our own local collectors don’t realize what they have in their own backyard!  Some of our artists have not yet developed a following, so you can make a purchase that may go up in value as that artist becomes well known. You can get some great deals on original art at Sunset! The ELEVENS are great example of that. You can purchase an original oil painting for $111 in SENTOSA. Now that is a deal!
  11. First Friday Art Walk is FREE.  There’s no cover charge–you don’t have to pay to enjoy the arts at Sunset. You will find entertainment and refreshments around every corner. The only thing you have to pay for is the art you take home with you.
I’m sure there are many more reasons-but since it’s November, the 11th month of the
year 2011–it’s all about ELEVEN!
November ELEVENS
There is still a little time if you want me to paint something special on one of the ELEVENS for November! But I have to have them finished by next Friday–so don’t wait long. Give me a call asap and I’ll make arrangements with you.

11-11-11

Mark your calendar for next Friday, November 11th at 7:11 in SENTOSA.
This will be the final ELEVENS CELEBRATION!
The final group of ELEVENS, 11″ x 11″ paintings, will be hanging.
Starting on 11-11-11 through December 11th will be
your last chance to buy these paintings for $111,
(regular price for these paintings is $300), and
everyone knows that the price will have to go up–
because it’s all about the numbers!

September ELEVENS–A Garden of Paintings

September ELEVENS all come from the garden. Scroll down and see them all:

This has been such a hot dry summer, I thought that the September ELEVENS might reflect a more normal summer in the Texas Panhandle. Even though I’ve watered and fertilized my geraniums they have not grown or bloomed–so a pink geranium is on one of the ELEVENS. I’ve even missed the bugs–I hadn’t seen a dragonfly until last week in the sculpture garden when it finally cooled down for a few days. There are so many dove in town–seems like they are everywhere and love to visit my feeder. These two are definitely in love and wouldn’t they make a great wedding gift? I always love the wild sunflowers growing in the bar ditches, but we have none this year–so I’ve painted 3 very different paintings of sunflowers. I’d love to know which style you like best. We’ve got ducks having a hen party and a swan enjoying her reflection in the pond while a kitten plays hide and seek behind a plant. A climbing rose around the door to the courtyard garden welcomes visitors. I hope you enjoy this garden of paintings for the September ELEVENS. I can’t think of a better way to brighten your spirits and home and without leaving town and the price is extra special too–only $111.

SENTOSA will be open today and tomorrow to give you all an opportunity to see these new paintings in person.  Sunday, the 11th from 11:11 a.m. to 5:11 p.m. and Monday, the 12th from 11:11 a.m. to 6:11 p.m. Come by and have some iced tea and visit a while.

As always, I’ll be in the gallery most afternoons, but call first just to be sure. I’ve got to do a few things at home I’ve been putting off that I really need to get done–like clean out my closet :( , so I may have to stay home a couple of days. We can always make an appointment for a good time to meet at Sunset.

We have two months of the ELEVENS project left and you have that much time to let me know if you want a paintings of something special whether it be a pet portrait, a landscape of a special place, a still life that includes a cherished pitcher or vase, a favorite flower. I will paint a commission on an 11″ x 11″ for one of the ELEVENS in October or November.

I’m not sure what I’m going to do for next year. This year it has all been about the number ELEVEN because it is 2011! If any of you have an idea–please share it with me. You can post a comment here or email me suggestions. When I make my decision, if I have used your suggestion–you will get a prize–not sure what, but it will be good!

August ELEVENS–Dog Days of Summer

In honor of the hottest summer on record, I painted ELEVEN paintings of DOGS–for the Dog Days of Summer! These paintings were so fun to paint. I tried to capture the personality of each dog. Hope you enjoy them as much as I enjoyed painting them. Several of these paintings were sold ahead of time. Some of my collectors requested that I paint their dog–so I did. They got a great painting for an even better price–and I sold almost all of them. If you have something you would like me to paint on one of the Elevens in the coming months, please let me know. I’ll do my best to do it for you!
