Old Church at Guadalapita

This little church is in Guadalapita, a village in northeastern New Mexico. We sometimes take a shortcut from Red River to Las Vegas down through Black Lake. You’ll go past this little church after that beautiful drive down the mountain and through the forest.
“Climb the mountains and get their good tidings. Nature's peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into trees. The winds will blow their own freshness into you...while cares will drop off like autumn leaves."
-- John Muir (1838-1914) author and naturalist

Something to Crow About

As a child, there was a big chicken like this one outside of Myers’ Fried Chicken. It was a favorite restaurant of my family and we often ate there on Sunday afternoon after church. On a trip to Sedonna, I saw this chicken in the flea market. I just had to paint it! It brought back all of those childhood memories like the smell of fried chicken sand honey and French fries and yellow gravy! I just had to laugh at the memories it brought! Like little flags you raise to get the waitress’s attention when you needed a refill!
“The faintest waft is sometimes enough to induce feelings of hunger or anticipation,
or to transport you back through time and space to a long-forgotten moment in
your childhood. It can overwhelm you in an instant or simply tease you,
creeping into your consciousness slowly and evaporating almost the
moment it is detected. “ ~Stephen Lacey, Scent in Your Garden, 1991

This Black Copper Rooster picked an abandoned watering can to roost on as he guards the chicken ranch. This Black Copper Maran breed is a favorite breed to paint. The gold neck is a perfect complement for the blue black tail feathers. Once more we are reminded of the perfection of God’s creations.

Black Copper Cockerel

This handsome Black Copper Rooster is strutting through the barnyard. This French breed is known for their striking copper necks and saddles. These magnificent roosters are a favorite study for me. I love the copper colored feathers contrasting with the blue-black of the tail feathers—Just another amazing example of complementary colors found in nature!
“They give me leftovers to feed the chickens, and then I give them eggs. They say that taking an early morning walk down a back road and hearing our rooster crow is one of the greatest things about living in the country.” Karen Ross

This Maran Rooster ran out in front of me just in time to be shot by my camera on a cruise to the Bahamas.! I think he knew exactly what he was doing—showing off those proud tail feathers! I put him in a barnyard for this painting, but actually, he was right downtown running across a busy street. Now tell me—why would a chicken cross the road?

When you see these fields of yellow flowers in the
late spring each year, it is no wonder why the
Spaniards called this area “Amarillo”.

I don't think this pot of geraniums will fit in the pot of tropical green plants. They will have to find another clay pot for this big red geraniums fully blooming on a spring day. The antique clay pot contrasts with the plastic nursery pot the geraniums come in each year. Those tropical plants go on year after year, but geraniums have a hard time living through the winter! A beautiful contrast for a still life just inside the plate glass windows.

Life is like a bowl of cherries or “a box of chocolates”! This unusual still life is a bird’s eye view of an antique glass bowl filled with ripe, red cherries on a lovely white lace tablecloth. As I painted it, I thought about that bowl of cherries—Sweet or Tart? Big or little? Life is full of contrasts and surprises just like that box of chocolates that Forrest Gump held in his lap at the bus stop.
