Gallery Hours

I am trying to set up some regular hours for the gallery to be open. I go up there almost every day, but there are times I have to be out painting or an appointment with a client–lots of different things. The best thing to do is just call me ahead of time. If I can, I will meet you at Sentosa-#102 in The Galleries at Sunset just about any day at any time. And if you just dropped by–chances are I would be there, but it is always to your advantage to call first, 806 676-1733. I may be there and be in the back working or in Amarillo Art Institute working on something–you just never know about me. If the gate is up, I’m usually around Sunset somewhere.

I don’t always open on Sundays and Mondays, but every other afternoon, I’m working at Sunset. So I guess my gallery hours are:

Tues-Thur 1:00-6:00 p.m.

Fridays and Saturdays 1:00-5:00 p.m.

1st Friday Art Walk–5:00-9:00 p.m. every month

I may be there in the mornings and on Monday, and even on these days during these hours–something may come up–You know the reputation we artists have–so I guess hours could be: By Chance or Appointment? Give me a call and you won’t be taking that chance on being disappointed.

Newest Projects

I am working on a painting that will be a donation for auction at the 2nd Chance Prom, Springtime in Paris, benefitting Martha’s Home in April. This nonprofit provides shelter for homeless women and children. They rehabilitate the women, help them find jobs and a home. It is a wonderful opportunity for me and the lucky buyer to help this charity that does so much for those less fortunate. The painting is a large oil on wood panel of a Paris street scene with flower vendors, a cafe and the Eiffel Tower in the distance. I will be working as a Paris street artist during the event. It sounds like a lot of fun with a great silent and live auction, dance contest, caricature artist, and food! For more information: Call Panhandle Tickets or Martha’s Home

I’ve got some beautiful pottery that I am working on including some large decorative bowls, mugs and brush holders. I really enjoy carving on the clay to create a unique texture. I have another painting of Sorenson’s Point in Palo Duro Canyon started and a couple of portraits of children. I’d love for you to come by and visit me in Sentosa at Sunset–just give me a call, 676-1733, and I’ll meet you there!

Holiday Open House–Saturday and Sunday 1-4–in Sentosa! You’re Invited

It’s not Black Friday yet, but if you want to get the jump on everybody and shop this weekend where you can pull up and park and there is no crowd to fight–show up at Sentosa, #102 at Sunset Center Saturday and Sunday for my Holiday Open House. It’s even better than buying local–you are buying locally but also locally made by the hands of a local artisan, Marsha Clements.

I’m celebrating more than the holidays! As of this week, I have completed my last teaching assignment. I have been an educator for many years, first teaching kindergarten, and first through third grades for over 21 years. I have spent almost as many working with teachers, schools, and districts as a professional development consultant. And for the last three years, I have taught drug resistance strategies to seventh graders in Amarillo Independent School District.

Starting this week, I am now focusing most of my time on my new career as a professional artist. I have opened Sentosa–a beautiful gallery at Sunset Center in Amarillo. I will be painting and promoting my art most of the time. I have an office in my gallery and I will work part time with Mission: Freedom’s Children. Mission: Freedom’s Children recognizes the exhaustive role that families play throughout the recovery process. From financial and emotional support to long-term care, family members step up to provide the necessary care, often with little thought for their own needs. Children often suffer in silence because of the hardships endured by their parents. Mission: Freedom’s Children seeks to alleviate the burdens of these children through education, counseling, and other forms of support. I will be the administrator for this nonprofit foundation on a part time basis.

I’m so excited to be starting a new chapter in my life. I hope all of you will help me celebrate this milestone this weekend at Sentosa–#102-in the east wing of Sunset Center, 3701 Plains Blvd. in Amarillo. This Holiday Celebration will be from 1-4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday afternoons November 20th and 21st.

We will have refreshments and a little sale at Sentosa. Any original work in the studio will be 20% off for anyone who mentions this email! You don’t have to bring in a coupon–just tell me you saw my note on Facebook or in an email! This does not include special orders–only completed paintings, jewelry, fiber art, and doll cases. Don’t miss the fun and friends.

Sentosa means tranquility in Malay– If you know me you know that my life is busy, wild, & wacky! But I am always trying to find a little peace and harmony. I do find that tranquility when I escape into my creative state of mind in SENTOSA at Sunset Center. Please come by and see the beautiful art I have–many great Christmas gift items! And nobody can gift wrap quite like me–and it’s free in Sentosa! Enjoy tranquility as you do your Christmas shopping in Sentosa!

A Day of Art

What a great day I had–painting! I did a little marketing, but mostly I painted. I’m working on a few suitcase dollcases for a show I’m having in Leawood, Kansas–really a suburb of Kansas City I guess–can’t tell where one ends and another begins–but this one is on the Kansas side of the river. I had seen that one of the artists who made doll clothes for American Girl dolls lived near Kansas City. I contacted her and asked if she might want to have a home show together when I went up there to visit my daughter and her family. She said it would be great. We are having it at her mother-in-law’s house! Pretty exciting really. New friends–they sound so nice online.

I have painted a suitcase for Kitt Kittredge and one for the 2010 Girl of the year-Lanie. They are looking great. I want to paint a smaller case for Barbie’s and hopefully one more before I go. They are time consuming. I get into these cases and research to find out about the doll’s story. Each has it’s own book/books with their stories. Kitt lived during the depression. Her father had to go to the city to look for work and her mother was forced to rent out rooms to make the mortgage. Kitt has a treehouse, so that is painted on one side of her case–it’s an older tweedy looking suitcase in great condition–so it makes a great dollhouse/case. On the other side, I painted the Kittredge house as it looked on one of the books. Inside, I’ll paint Kitt’s room.

Lanie is an outdoorsy girl and loves wildlife and is interested in conservation. I’m painting her camper on the back of the case and a scene with trees and a lake on the other side. Inside, the suitcase was designed for suits. I am painting the dividers like her bedroom might look on one set, the inside of her camper in the middle, and I haven’t decided about the next compartment.

Then tonight I got an email from a group in New York City that is doing an online art competition, Re:Form School. One of their task force members had seen my painting on etsy and emailed me asking me to submit it in the contest. I thought that was great! So I entered the painting–we’ll see what happens.

This week, my husband Gail and I are going to see our youngest daughter and her family–and going to the Kansas City Plaza Art Festival. I’m excited about that too. It always inspires me when I see lots of beautiful art. I’m looking forward to this week, getting the rest of my painting completed, seeing the grandkids and my daughter and her husband, and going to the art festival and the show next week. Life is good!Class of 2000

Want to Learn to Paint?

I’m always having people ask me about teaching painting classes and I just hate to be tied down. But I’m going to let it happen. I know I’m a great teacher–Heck–I’ve been an educator for over 35 years! And I have taught art in the past. I want to have very small classes–any level from beginner to advanced. We will learn about painting techniques and the elements of art that make a good painting. I want to keep the class size at 4 or less because there is limited space in the studio. I will teach an evening class on Tuesday from 6:00-8:30 and on Wednesday afternoon from 2:30-5:00. These classes will start in September. If you are interested in being involved, give me a call (806 676-1733) or send an email (marsha@marshaclements.com) and I’ll send you a supply list, etc. You can paint in oil or acrylic, but I’ll tell you in advance that I prefer oils. I’m not a watercolor painter at all and I’m not trained in pastels, so we won’t be using those mediums.

August Lites 2010

This weekend is August Lites for 2010 and the artists at Sunset Center are gearing up for a big weekend. Lots of things are going on. At Sentosa–#102 in the East Wing of the Galleries at Sunset–I’ve been busy painting some small studies, some new windows and a pair of pink flamingos. The vintage windows have really been good sellers. They can be garden art or you can use them for shabby chic art in your house. I have a pair of sunflowers, a red poppy, a pink hibiscus, red and pink hollyhocks, and a rooster. They are fabulous!

This year our theme is “Birds” so I’ve got lots of roosters, a hen and chicks, a beautiful raku vase with a bird and I’m painting a window with a tree and birds in the tree! Several artists have painted and decorated flamingos–and there will be a special drawing for visitors that find all of the flamingos.

On Saturday and Sunday afternoons, artists will get together in the garden to paint plein aire for a couple of hours and then their paintings will be sold at auction following the paint out. I haven’t decided if I’m painting–I’m pretty much a “fair weather plein aire painter”. I love to paint outdoors when the weather is perfect–not too hot or too cold, not too windy, no bugs, shade is always nice–I’m fair skinned and don’t need to sunburn (don’t want any new wrinkles or skin cancer)–so who knows if I’ll be outside painting. But I will be in the gallery painting. I’ve also been making pottery–vases, bowls, trays, garden bells, wind chimes, and a beautiful fountain! I’m having the best time and it really is turning out beautiful. Can’t wait to open the kiln tomorrow! I’ll take some pictures and post them tomorrow. It’s going to be a great time–August 14, Saturday 10-5 and Sunday, August 15, 1-5. You don’t want to miss August Lites–it’s for the “Birds!”

On Your Wall–One of a Kind Murals Customized for You!

I recently got a call from a young couple that are expecting their first baby–a baby girl named Autumn will arrive in August and they couldn’t be more excited. The dad called to see if I could paint a tree on the nursery wall. It was exciting to meet with these two young people that are so excited to be starting the next phase of their lives. They wanted a tree, with their initials and a heart carved in the trunk, a crabapple or cherry blossom tree in spring with lady bugs and dragonflies and sunflowers to match their linens. The first flowers he had ever given her were sunflowers. It was really so sweet, especially that the dad was so involved in the process of decorating this nursery. I loved doing this for them. I personalized the tree with a fairy door with Autumn’s name and address over the door. The heart was carved into the trunk. Ladybugs are everywhere in the garden. Here are some pictures–but they really don’t do the room justice–it is precious–and I had a blast painting it!

Taos Mountain Shower

Taos Mountain ShowerThere’s nothing quite like watching a storm come over a mountain. You can smell the rain, then you begin to hear the rain and the leaves rustle on the mountain, and then you see the rain falling ahead of you, but coming your way. In northern New Mexico, showers come in over the mountains almost every afternoon in the late summer and early fall. This is the Taos Mountain and a shower is on its way in, but is not here yet. In fact, the sun is still shining on the chamisa and the mountain as the storm builds on both sides.

Spring, Flowers, and Gardens

Spring is finally here–I think! It seems that we had the April showers last week, and now the winds are in full blast. I sat at two softball games this week, freezing to death in a strong north wind! You would have thought that a major snow storm would have followed it in. It has now settled to a brisk breeze, but I don’t think I’ve really warmed up yet! I am warming up to some garden art though. I haven’t quite got ready to plant flowers outside–I think we could still get a freeze, maybe a snow! but it’s not too early to plant art in the garden to brighten any spot.

window rooster

This is a picture of one of the rooster windows that features a black copper maran cock.

I’ve also been painting old wooden windows with flowers and roosters to hang indoors or out. The shabby chic windows are beautiful hanging on your wooden fence or brick garden wall. They are a great way to brighten your garden while waiting for those annuals to fill the garden with beautiful blooms. So far I’ve painted a rooster, poppies, hollyhocks, and sunflowers. These paintings and bells are available in my gallery–Sentosa–#102 in East Wing of the Galleries at Sunset (3701 Plains Blvd, Amarillo, TX). I’m there most days, but you can call 806 676-1733 just to be sure–sometimes I am out working on a project or painting outdoors or at a ballgame–our grand-daughter Bailey’s softball team is in the playoffs. All of the galleries will be open Friday, May 7th for the First Friday Art Walk from 5-9 pm.
